Facelift surgery, like other cosmetic or functional surgery, requires adequate planning and preparation. The procedure typically entails rejuvenating the face by minimising common signs of ageing and regaining a youthful appearance.

To achieve this end result, there are some valuable preoperative tips to prepare you for your facelift surgery which are classified into three phases:

     Weeks before the surgery

     A day before the surgery

     After the surgery.

Conduct thorough research on potential surgeons, including their training, experience, past procedures, and patient testimonials. Set up consultations to discuss possible risks, your needs, and your goals, including your look at a facelift before and after with the young features you desire.

Comply with your surgeon’s evaluation to determine your suitability for the facelift surgery. Ensure you share your medical records and disclose any medical condition or information relevant to your surgery.

If you’re a smoker, quit smoking six weeks before your surgery. This is because smoking can induce surgical complications and slow down the healing process.

Additionally, avoid taking dietary supplements or over-the-counter drugs like aspirin or diclofenac that might affect the procedure's outcome.

Start maintaining a healthy diet at least 4 weeks before your surgery. Reduce alcohol intake, eat a balanced diet, snack on fruits, and stay hydrated. Observe any pre-operative fasting instructions given by your doctor.

Arrange for a friend or caregiver to assist and stay with you for at least a day after your procedure. You should also discuss transportation to and from the hospital.

Before your treatment, ensure your house is in the best possible condition. Create a relaxing environment that promotes a quick recovery by using fresh linen, slightly raised pillows, and some form of entertainment.

You should also keep some items within reach, such as water, your TV remote, toilet paper, and medications. Wear button-up tops until after your full recovery, and avoid clothing that goes over your head.

Make plans to get some rest and free up your calendar. Tell your family, friends, and coworkers about your facelift procedure and anticipated recuperation time.

Fill your freezer with food to save time. Rest for a week, then take a short stroll to help with blood circulation.

This is the recovery stage. Before your surgery, your surgeon must have informed you of post-operative care, including potential side effects, indications for concern, and the essential precautions for a quick recovery. Here are some useful post-operative tips:

Adhere strictly to care guidelines and recommendations provided by your surgeon. Use medications as prescribed and stay hydrated. To monitor your progress, ensure you attend all follow-up appointments.

Swellings, bruising, and discomfort are expected the first few days after your surgery. Try to follow your doctor’s instructions on managing the pain and discomfort. Use your medications as prescribed, use bandages as suggested, elevate your pillow, and apply ice packs when necessary.

Keep your surgeon informed about your progress, inform them of any concerns or distress, and most importantly, follow all recommendations and guidance for a smooth recovery.

In addition, maintain a healthy balanced diet, avoid strenuous activities, and prioritise rest. Do not smoke to avoid suffering complications, and do not restart until a month after your procedure.

Generally, a facelift procedure will make you look younger and fresher for about a decade or less. While the initial recovery phase can be difficult, certain lifestyle adjustments can improve overall results. Here are a few recommended lifestyle adjustments:

Consume a lot of fruits, whole grains, vitamins, proteins, minerals, and veggies to enhance speedy recovery.

Avoid sun exposure and use high-SPF sunscreen to protect your skin. Use prescribed post-surgical care cleansers and moisturisers, you can speak to your doctor for recommendations. Additionally, avoid makeup for a couple of weeks.

Rest adequately, nap in the day, and sleep 7 to 8 hours every night.

Minimise stress, practice relaxation techniques, and gradually resume light activity as your surgeon directs, such as yoga, walking, stretching, and meditation.

Conclusion

Effective preparation before and after your facelift surgery is essential for a smooth recovery and can optimise a desirable outcome. By applying the aforementioned tips, you’re well-positioned for great care. Ensure you use your medications as prescribed and consult your surgeon for personalised instructions on recovery.
